The Art Exhibit in Kingston You Need to See: ‘Jamaica, Jamaica’

‘Jamaica, Jamaica!: How Jamaican Music Conquered the World‘ is the latest art exhibit being shown at the National Gallery of Jamaica. It opened on February 2 and closes on June 28, 2020. It’s one of the most exciting exhibits ever launched by this gallery and was aptly opened in February, locally observed as Reggae Month. This exhibit was previously shown at Philharmonie de Paris in 2017 and titled “The General” after the 1985 hit song by artiste Brigadier. Renamed Jamaica, Jamaica! after gracing local shores, this exhibit documents how the tiny Caribbean island of Jamaica was able to become a global musical force to be reckoned with. The capital city of Kingston and venue of the exhibition is recognized as the birthplace of six distinct musical genres which led to Kingston being designated official UNESCO creative city status in 2015.

The sun rises and sets at roughly the same time in Jamaica each day, give and take a few minutes. This constant supply of golden sunshine is guaranteed because of our close proximity to the Equator at 18 degrees North, and is the reason behind the golden stripe on the Jamaican flag. That being said, we don’t always appreciate the beauty of the sunset in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, with buildings, billboards and rush hour traffic blocking the view. The 10 Most Instagrammable Places in Jamaica

I feel lucky to come from and live on this tiny rock in the Caribbean Sea. According to Bob Marley, Jamaica is a paradise but Jamaicans are the only ones who don’t know it, a rather unfortunate but true statement since poll after poll shows that most Jamaicans are disillusioned with the nation’s direction. Jamaica has many issues but one thing we aren’t short of is beauty. The island is so beautiful with its verdant rugged mountains, clear blue rivers, majestic waterfalls, stunning rainforests, idyllic beaches and dramatic sunsets. After much deliberation and in no particular order, I’ve decided that these places deserve a space on this list of Jamaica’s top 10 most Instagrammable spots.

Konoko Falls, Saint Ann

Konoko Falls is a tourist attraction nestled in the hilly outskirts of popular resort town Ocho Rios. The Arawakan word for rainforest, konoko, lends its name to this 600-feet cascading waterfall and garden, formerly known as the Mahoe Falls and Coyaba Gardens; coyaba is also an Arawakan word meaning heaven. Both names are fitting, even more so given that Taino artefacts have been found here, suggesting that the area was once a settlement.

Maracas & Las Cuevas Beaches, Trinidad

Northern Trinidad is home to several beaches, inlets and bays. I beach-hopped at two beaches located roughly an hour’s drive from the capital Port-of-Spain. Maracas Beach is Trinidad’s most famous beach and rightfully so. It’s a long beautiful stretch of coastline touted as the best spot to get bake and shark, a local fried fish sandwich topped with various condiments and popularly eaten at the beach. However, visiting the most popular beach equals a crowd, thus it’s worth checking out its more peaceful and equally as scenic sister a mere five minutes’ drive away, Las Cuevas Beach. Book this excursion to visit both beaches and more (transport included)!

Six Things To Do In Port of Spain, Trinidad

Port of Spain is the second largest city of Trinidad and Tobago and also its capital city, located on the Gulf of Paria in northwestern Trinidad. Port of Spain is a leading city in the Caribbean, serving primarily as a retail, shipping, administrative and financial centre, home to two of the region’s largest banks. A spirited city with a vibrant street food culture and night life, Port of Spain slips below the radar as a tourist attraction except during Carnival which is the city’s main annual festival. The island is widely recognized as the birthplace of Carnival.

Turure Water Steps: A Trinidad Adventure

Happy New Year! I hope it’s everything you wish it to be and more. Visiting the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago (well, really just Trinidad and to be specific, mainly northern Trinidad) is a sentimental trip for several reasons. I visited during the festive season and my heart was full seeing all the decorations; their malls come alive at Christmastime, and parang music and culture is amazing. I rang in 2020 paranging and watching the fireworks of Port of Spain from several miles away. That’s enough to make this trip memorable, but there’s more.

2019 Year In Review

2019 had its challenges but it has been the best year of my life yet. I accomplished everything I wanted to, and then some. I pushed myself and had a lot of “wow, can’t believe I did that” moments. It was an amazing year of growth, risk-taking and change.
