Is Jamaica Safe for Tourists?

Derived from an Arawakan word which means “Land of Wood and Water,” Jamaica is a popular Caribbean destination known for its beautiful rivers, lush rainforests, stunning beaches, vibrant culture and warm hospitality. While Jamaica is a tourist hotspot, like any other travel destination, it’s essential to be mindful of safety concerns in order to ensure a secure and enjoyable trip, especially if you’re traveling solo! With that said, today I sat down with solo traveler Amanda of Amanda’s 876 Adventures to find out if Jamaica is safe for tourists + get some great tips for tourists traveling to Jamaica.

TL;DR: Yes, Jamaica is safe for tourists with a 0.01% chance of visitors ever experiencing any crime here!

Find Serenity in Kingston: Yoga Classes with Danielle

Did you know that yoga offers profound benefits that extend beyond exercise and flexibility? Yoga’s holistic approach encompasses the mind, body and soul, making it a truly transformative practice. Physically, yoga enhances flexibility, strength, and balance, promotes better posture, reduces the risk of injuries and assists with weight loss and toning. However, the best benefits come from the controlled breathing techniques employed in yoga which can alleviate stress and foster a deep sense of relaxation, mindfulness and mental clarity. These are the benefits I once reaped from yoga with online videos but somehow or the other, I stopped practicing during medical school. Thus, I was super excited to attend Danielle’s inaugural yoga class in Jamaica earlier this month. The mental clarity I gained from that session lasted for days. As such, I decided to have a chat with this Jamaican yogi and share how you can find your own serenity from Danielle’s yoga classes in Kingston, Jamaica.

Stevos Weavos: A Story of Culture & Craftsmanship

Weaving is an integral part of Jamaica’s cultural heritage and reflects the island’s diverse traditions and influences. Traditionally, Jamaican weavers utilize natural materials to craft their baskets and woven items such as straw, commonly obtained from dried palm leaves which grow abundantly in Jamaica and provide the weavers with a sustainable and eco-friendly resource. Jamaican weaving techniques have been passed down through generations, with each community or family of weavers often having its signature style. While basket weaving remains an essential cultural tradition, it faces some challenges in the modern era. It’s often said that our cultural traditions are dying as the younger generation appears less interested in learning traditional crafts. However, I recently had the opportunity to interview a young Jamaican weaver who is maintaining this traditional craft. Here’s what Shane Miller from New Market, St. Elizabeth had to say.

Endometriosis Awareness

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month. Those who suffer from endometriosis know that it can be a very painful debilitating disease. Endometriosis is an inflammatory condition where the lining of the uterus (womb) can be found in other parts of the body such as the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, abdominal cavity and even in the brain and lung! This ectopic uterine tissue responds to the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle and results in inflammation, chronic pain and even infertility. Unfortunately, not a lot is known about why this condition exists, and there is currently no cure.

Chatting with Creative Jamaican Medics (Part 3)

Last Christmas (#blogmas2020) I had the idea to feature health care workers doing great things outside of their careers in health care, and my first article was well-received. My follow-up article also did well so this month I’m back with part three. The pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of many, especially health care workers, so it’s great to see that there are many who still make time for their passions which lie outside of medicine, nursing and physiotherapy. Here are their stories.

Chatting With More Creative Jamaican Medics

It’s a new month, so I’m starting June right with a new blog post. Last Christmas (#blogmas2020) I had the idea to feature five health care workers doing great things outside of their careers in medicine and nursing, simply because I always get asked how do I make time to blog consistently as a medical doctor. To be honest, it’s not easy but I believe people make time for what they love, and I love blogging, exploring Jamaica and trying new things. Today I’m back with seven medical doctors making time for their passion projects to inspire you all to ford your own streams. Read part one here.

10 Bloggers Share Their Favourite Part of the Holidays

Christmas is easily my favourite time of year. The weather is cooler, everyone seems cheerier and the pace of life and work slows down. Good luck trying to do business in Jamaica during December. Friends and families get together, decorations and ‘pepper lights’ go up, and my favourite foods and drinks like Christmas cake and sorrel are abundant. I love that Christianity isn’t the only religious festival at this time of year too, as Jews celebrate Hanukkah a few days before Christmas, and Kwanzaa is also a special time of year for African-Americans.

Chatting with 5 Creative Jamaican Medics (Part I)

You’d never believe how often I get asked about how do I make time to blog as a doctor. People are often in awe, and I get it. The hours are horrible, but we are human too with other talents, interests and callings besides medicine, ranging from cooking, baking, sewing and more! Today I feature five talented medics who are doing amazing things while balancing their careers in medicine.

Q&A | Adventures from Elle

On my personal Instagram page this month, I asked my followers what would they like to know about me or my blog and that I’d answer during my five-day 2nd anniversary celebratory blog-a-thon. I usually write from a more aloof position since I try to be very objective and matter-of-fact in sharing my adventures, but every now and again I welcome sharing more of me in my writing. Without further ado, here are my answers to those questions plus a few other questions I’ve received during this blog’s 2 year existence or just general facts I felt would be interesting to share!
