Are You Seeking Security or Adventure?

These WordPress prompts are really getting good! I found this one too good to pass up so here I am answering another philosophical question, similar to when I answered the question “what does having it all mean to you?” a few weeks ago. It may come as a surprise considering that I run a travel & lifestyle blog which began as a space to showcase my mostly Jamaican adventures, but I’d choose security any day. Here’s why.

Daily writing prompt
Are you seeking security or adventure?

I’m from a humble background and single parent family, where a lot of my early years were spent moving around often. Growing up, I always dreamed about putting down roots somewhere in a house and home I could call my own. I wanted a career which would allow me to provide for myself and my family well. As I grew older, I also began dreaming of a partner to do life with and share new experiences, someone who would love and be loved by my family and friends, and vice versa. Currently, I’d say I’m well on my way to achieving this idea I have of security. In fact, I’ve put adventures on hold for close to a year now to make part of this security dream possible. Sure, I still take the occasional local day trip for my peace of mind. However, the funds I could’ve used to take overseas dream trips in 2023 have been rerouted to buying + renovating a house. It’s definitely not commonplace for 20-something year old Jamaicans to own their own house, unless they inherited it but right now, I’ve made my choice for security first and adventures later, and I don’t regret it. That deep-seated satisfaction I feel when I get home from work is worth it plus I’m sure I’ll be back on the road soon anyway. Once my pocket recovers (hopefully in 2024), I’ll be catching flights again. 🙂

On that note, if you noticed that my blogs have changed to more list-style content and guest posts rather than adventure recaps for 2023, that’s partially why! I’m passionate about writing and maintaining Adventures from Elle, even if I don’t have new adventures to share with you all the time. Same goes for my Instagram where I’ve posted mostly recycled content for 2023 but this dry spell won’t last forever.

Also, for the Jamaicans reading, I plan to write about my home ownership journey soon to provide advice for aspiring home owners but I’m not sure where to start or how to approach it yet. If you have ideas or questions, please share so I can get the inspiration to begin creating that resource.

Wrap Up

Well, that’s my two cents on choosing security over adventure but that’s not to say I believe any choice is right or righter than the other. It’s just a matter of doing some soul searching, understanding your wants and needs, and then going after what matters to you most. With that said, what matters more to you? I’d love to know. Talk to me in the comments. 🙂 Also, do subscribe for new articles. I publish new articles on Fridays (mostly).

‘Til next time.

As someone who used to handle the paperwork and document signing for people buying and selling homes, I have to say that first time home buyers were my favorites to close. There is so much excitement and anticipation of the future. I am super impressed that you have bought yourself a home! Congratulations, my friend.

Security and adventure both have a number of facets. My wife and I worked on security first and owning a place you call home was the first step and that doesn’t mean owning it along with a bank… One facet of adventure for us was financial. We decided early on that to really achieve long lasting security you had to take financial risks by also owning your own business and they were all adventurers (5 start ups – 2 failed, 1 just so so and 2 really succeeded). From that base adventure gets easier and the best adventures are outside your comfort zone. Life has more meaning after you realize that you went out there and looked over the edge. Well into our 70’s now we won’t stop until we’re forced to…

That’s amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this. I agree that there’s adventure in taking the risks needed to achieve true security. Sometimes we’re so afraid to fail that we don’t take action, but there are so many lessons learnt even in failure. I’ll bear this in mind. Super happy 2 businesses succeeded. 🙂 keep living your dreams!

Security is always paramount. When choosing a destination, you always have to be aware the political climate and other factors of the region. You don’t ever want to be in a place where you feel uneasy. I remember sitting in a cafe in Kathmandu, Nepal and the thought came over me, “wow, I’m so far from home” but it was one of my greatest trips.

That’s so true. Adventure is great but never if it compromises safety. That’s why research before buying a ticket to a foreign country is so important. Thanks for reading!

Maybe having a decent degree of security is one of the factors in enabling us to seek adventure. That’s certainly true in our case.

I love that. Security first, adventure after. It’s always lovely to come back to a home base after sightseeing
