Poet Reef is a salubrious luxury three bedroom waterfront villa located on Jamaica’s north coast in Cousins Cove, Hanover. Constructed of hand-cut stone and furnished with locally made pieces, the villa looks like a home which could have been built in a previous era, but is equipped with modern conveniences which would give it away as a gem from our generation. Poet Reef overlooks an expansive cove and the view is nothing short of breathtaking. Consider Poet Reef for your next vacation on Jamaica’s north coast if you’re looking for a unique place to idle awhile. Let me take you on a short tour of this beautiful property.

Where is Poet Reef?

Located in Cousins Cove, Poet Reef is an hour’s drive from Montego Bay. That drive takes you through Tryall where you can admire the Tryall Water Wheel at the Tryall Estate, and later Lucea where you can check out historical gems like Fort Charlotte. This was the first time I ever drove this far west through the parish of Hanover and I was pleasantly surprised, having only visited this parish once last year with a stay at the Grand Palladium All-Inclusive Hotel. We’ve truly all been sleeping on Hanover. The parish is so beautiful with quite a lot to do, but Hanover gets overshadowed by its neighbours Negril and Montego Bay, Jamaica’s most famous tourism meccas.
Poet Reef is located on a right turn from the main road shortly after passing Jason’s Bar.
My Experience at Poet Reef

The caretaker Morris was very helpful and welcoming. He assisted with directions to the property, showed us around the villa and made sure we settled in nicely. He also reminded us that he was just a phone call away in case we needed anything. The imposing building was even more stunning in person. I can’t even begin to imagine what it must have costed to build a structure this grand, but I’m grateful its owner Bart undertook the task. Stone buildings can withstand the hands of time so we know this gorgeous building will be standing for centuries.
We arrived near golden hour so I didn’t waste too much time indoors. I got to work in capturing as many pictures and videos of the incredible sunset as I could.

The villa has three floors. The ground floor has a kitchen equipped with a stove, refrigerator, microwave, pots, pans, crockery and utensils, as well as a bathroom, dining area and living room. I appreciated all the art work on the ground floor. The middle floor has two bedrooms and a bathroom, while the top floor is a loft which serves as the third bedroom. The main bedrooms were minimalist but comfortably furnished, and each opened onto an attractive balcony. The bathrooms only have a shower– no bathtub, but I didn’t mind that. Showers save so much water. There is an abundance of Turkish cotton towels in the bathroom cupboards to which one can help oneself, and hot water is available. All the rooms are air conditioned and also have a ceiling fan. There’s no ironing board but I ironed on the bed with an iron I borrowed from Morris. A housekeeper and cook is available on request at an additional cost, but we opted to make our own meals from groceries we bought in Montego Bay.
Poet Reef is equally as stunning at nights. The only sounds were the peaceful ebb and flow of the waves against the craggy rocks and a few crickets. Sniffing the salubrious salty night air and sipping on Irish cream on the pier at Poet Reef with good company is one of my most cherished memories of 2021 thus far.

Day time activities at Poet Reef include going for a swim, taking a stroll around the entire property, checking out the old pier, spending time at the dry beach and snorkeling. Ask Morris for snorkel equipment if you don’t have your own.
