Portland is often described as Jamaica’s most naturally beautiful parish. Located on the island’s northeast coast, this lush region is home to dramatic mountains, sweeping valleys, secluded beaches, hidden waterfalls and winding rivers. Unlike the busier resort towns on the north coast, Portland offers a quieter and more adventurous side of Jamaica. It’s a place where you can hike deep into the Blue Mountains, raft down a historic river, connect with Jamaica’s indigenous people and eat jerk in the place where it was born. 1. Hike to Blue Mountain Peak.
Standing at 7,402 feet (2,256 metres) above sea level, Blue Mountain Peak is the highest point in Jamaica and one of the most rewarding hikes in the Caribbean. Most hikers begin the journey on the Peak Trail, which starts near Whitfield Hall and climbs through dense cloud forest to the summit. The hike is typically done overnight so you can reach the peak for sunrise, when views stretch across the island and sometimes even to Cuba on clear days. Many travelers choose to camp along the route at:
- Jay’s Guest House
- Whitfield Hall
- Lime Tree Farm
- Portland Gap.
If the full hike feels too strenuous, you can still experience camping in Portland at somewhere more relaxed such as Lowe’s Camping Ground, Holywell or near the beautiful Nonsuch Falls.
2. Visit Portland’s Hidden Waterfalls.
Portland is home to nearly two dozen of Jamaica’s most spectacular waterfalls, many of which are tucked deep inside the rainforest. Some of the best waterfalls in Portland to explore include: Reach Falls (easiest to visit), Nanny Falls, Fish Dunn Falls and also Nonsuch Falls, a remote cascade which is the tallest known waterfall in Jamaica. These waterfalls offer everything from easy swimming holes to adventurous hikes. As these waterfalls are mostly located off-grid, you’ll either need your own car or to hire a trusted tour guide (my recommendation).
3. Relax on Portland’s Beautiful Beaches.
Portland’s beaches are some of the most scenic in Jamaica thanks to the lush mountains that rise dramatically behind them. Three of the most popular beaches are:
- Winnifred Beach: a beloved public beach with a huge success story, known for its laid-back vibe and local food vendors.
- Frenchman’s Cove: often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Jamaica where a river flows directly into the sea (and you can even spend the night).
- Boston Bay: a lively beach famous for surfing and jerk cuisine.
Each beach offers a slightly different atmosphere, from peaceful relaxation to vibrant local culture.
4. Go Rafting on the Rio Grande.
One of the most iconic activities in Portland is rafting on the Rio Grande. Bamboo rafting began here in the early 20th century when banana farmers used rafts to transport produce downriver to Port Antonio, Portland’s capital. Today, it has become one of Jamaica’s most unique and relaxing excursions. Guided by an experienced raft captain, you’ll float slowly down the river while taking in views of lush rainforest, small villages, and towering mountains. It’s one of the most peaceful experiences you can have in Portland, and some of the best food I’ve ever eaten was prepared right here on this river at Belinda’s Restaurant. 5. Explore the Blue Lagoon.
The famous Blue Lagoon is one of the most magical places in Jamaica. This natural lagoon is known for its constantly changing shades of blue, caused by a mixture of freshwater springs and seawater. The lagoon is also believed to be incredibly deep, though its exact depth remains debated. One of the best ways to explore is by boat or kayak, which allows you to glide across the calm water and visit nearby spots like Monkey Island. Staying close to the Blue Lagoon allows you to visit it early in the morning or late afternoon when it’s especially peaceful. Consider accommodations like:

- Goblin Hill Villas at San San.
6. Go Horseback Riding Along the Coast.
Horseback riding is another unforgettable way to experience Portland’s beautiful coastline. This local operator in Port Anotonio offers guided leisurely rides along scenic trails that wind through lush rainforests, farmlands, old plantations, the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman’s Cove and even directly into the sea. This tour is a great way to cover a lot of Portland’s iconic natural attractions in an hour for a reasonable price.
7. Learn About the Maroons.
Portland has deep historical roots tied to the Jamaican Maroons, communities formed by formerly enslaved Africans who escaped colonial plantations and established independent settlements in Jamaica’s mountains alongside the Tainos, Jamaica’s indigenous people. You can learn about this history by visiting either Moore Town, home to the majestic Nanny Falls, or Charles Town on a guided tour. These sites offer insights into Maroon culture, traditions and the remarkable resistance that shaped Jamaica’s history.
8. Try an Adventurous Water Sport.
If you’re looking for adventure, Portland offers excellent opportunities for water sports. For surfing lessons, head to Great Huts Eco Resort where instructors teach beginners how to ride waves at Boston Beach — one of Jamaica’s few surf spots. All levels are welcome, and boards are available for rent. If you’re interested in exploring beneath the sea, scuba diving excursions are available with Lady G Diver by the Alligator Head Foundation, a protected sanctuary. Lastly, show off your fine angling skills in the International Blue Marlin Tournament at the Errol Flynn Marina, a three-day event held in October each year. 9. Take a Blue Mountain Coffee Tour.
The Blue Mountains are world famous for producing some of the most sought-after coffee on the planet. Several farms and cafés offer tours where you can learn about coffee cultivation and taste freshly brewed cups. While most are located in the parish of St. Andrew, a few can be accessed from Portland and give visitors a deeper appreciation for the craftmanship behind Jamaica’s famous Blue Mountain coffee. 10. Go Cycling in the Blue Mountains
For outdoor enthusiasts, cycling through the Blue Mountains is an unforgettable experience. Along the way, riders enjoy incredible views of Portland’s valleys and coastline far below.
