1. Broken Plate

Broken Plate has quickly become one of Kingston’s most talked-about dining destinations. Locally owned and chef-driven, this rooftop restaurant takes familiar Jamaican ingredients and presents them in elevated, inventive ways. The menu blends Jamaican comfort food like lobster, curry goat and ox-tail with international influences, creating dishes that feel both familiar and refreshingly different. Expect thoughtful plating, bold flavours, and a menu that changes often to keep things fresh. The atmosphere is relaxed but polished, making it perfect for a romantic date night, celebratory dinner or a memorable meal with friends. Even better, their consistency is unmatched as I’ve received exemplary service and quality at six visits and counting. Broken Plate represents the new generation of Kingston restaurants — modern, creative, and proudly local.

For lovers of Indian food, Tamarind Indian Cuisine is widely considered one of the best restaurants in Kingston. Known for its rich spices, aromatic curries, and delicious garlic naan, Tamarind delivers consistently excellent Indian cuisine. The restaurant is part of a family of establishments that includes its sister restaurant, Saffron Indian Cuisine, which also serves authentic Indian dishes at the Marketplace on Constant Spring Road. Their most popular dishes are their butter chicken and chicken tikka masala, both of which can be found on their affordable lunch menu, an occasional guilty pleasure of mine when I used to work in Kingston.

3. Orchid Thai

One of Kingston’s newest but most beloved Asian restaurants, Orchid Thai has built a loyal following thanks to its exceptional decor, authentic Thai cuisine and consistently excellent dishes. For residents of Kingston, it’s the go-to destination for Thai food. The menu includes a wide range of traditional Thai favourites, including fragrant curries, stir-fried noodle dishes, and flavourful soups. The restaurant’s cocktail menu is also a crowd favourite while its cozy atmosphere makes it a favourite for romantic dinners, takeout nights and relaxed meals with friends.

4. Chilitos Jamexican Restaurant

Chilitos Jamexican Restaurant offers a unique twist on Mexican cuisine by blending it with Jamaican flavours. The result is a vibrant menu filled with bold spices and creative combinations. The restaurant is especially popular for its lunch bowls, burritos, tacos, and strong flavourful cocktails, making it a great midday stop or casual evening hangout for a young trendy crowd. Chilitos has also perfected its annual seasonal menus around Cinco de Mayo, summer, Halloween and Christmas, giving fans favourites to look forward to year-round. I eagerly anticipate the pumpkin spice and sorrel margaritas every year, yum! I only hope that they bring back Quesadilla Thursdays one day; Margarita Mondays, Taco Tuesdays and Burrito Fridays are not enough.

Fun fact: my first date with my husband was at Chive, so the restaurant holds a special place in my heart. 🙂 Chive Restaurant offers a refined dining experience with a menu that blends international techniques with Caribbean ingredients. The restaurant focuses on well-balanced beautifully-presented dishes that feel elegant without being overly complicated. It’s a great place to go when you want something a little more sophisticated but still relaxed, and is perfect for date nights with its small interior, chic decor and soft mood lighting. Chive also offers an excellent weekend brunch.

No list of Kingston restaurants would be complete without a jerk joint. And, when locals talk about the best jerk restaurant in the city, Kingston Jerk frequently comes up in the conversation. The smoky aroma of jerk seasoning and pimento wood grilling draws crowds regularly. The flavours are bold, authentic, and satisfying, with popular options including: jerk chicken, jerk pork, festival and roasted breadfruit. If you want to experience true Jamaican jerk without venturing outside the capital city, Kingston Jerk is a must-visit. An honorary mention also goes to Peppa Thyme, another beloved spot known for excellent jerk and flavourful Jamaican dishes.

While many people visit Jamaica Liquor Warehouse for its impressive selection of spirits, the venue has also become known for its satisfying food menu. I had such a fantastic Valentine’s Day dinner here four years ago that I’m surprised I haven’t been back since– but I really need to return. This restaurant offers a mix of casual and sophisticated dishes that pair well with cocktails, making it a popular place for after-work drinks, date nights or weekend hangouts.

If you’re craving seafood, Y-Knot Bar & Grill in Port Royal is a strong contender for the best in Kingston. Known for its waterfront setting and relaxed vibe, the restaurant offers fresh seafood dishes with Caribbean flair and great customer service (unlike another popular Jamaican seafood eatery). Popular choices include: steamed and Escovitch fish, lobster when in season and garlic shrimp. The laid-back environment and ocean views make Y-Knot a great place to enjoy a slow meal with friends or family. Even better, Y-Knot also offers roundtrip boat tours to Lime Cay!
