Luxury Redefined at the Rockhouse Hotel in Negril

Perched on the rugged cliffs of Negril’s West End, the award-winning Rockhouse Hotel & Spa stands as a breathtaking beacon of luxury and tranquility in the westernmost corner of Jamaica. A stark departure from conventional resorts, Rockhouse boasts 40 individually designed villas and rooms stretched along the cliffside. This intimate retreat has become synonymous with unparalleled beauty, spectacular sunsets and a seamless integration of nature and fine architecture, earning it a spot on my list of Jamaica’s best boutique hotels. I was super excited for this stay, having booked it months in advance for a birthday surprise! Rockhouse met exceeded my expectations, so I thought it fitting to share my review on Adventures from Elle.

How to Get to Rockhouse, Jamaica?

The Rockhouse Hotel and Spa is located on West End Road, 3.5km from the Negril roundabout at which you take the first exit. The entrance is located on the right and is quite easy to spot from the main road. Free open-air parking is available, but spaces were limited. Hospitality starts at the gate as the security guard, my first point of contact with the hotel, was quite warm and friendly. Prices to stay at Rockhouse start at US$150 per night for double occupancy during off-season.

What to Expect + My Experience

The check-in process was a breeze as the receptionist made my partner and I feel right at home. We were greeted with complimentary rum punches (pleasantly strong!) and cold towels which were a cool relief after a 4 hour drive from Kingston on a hot sultry day. We were surprised with a free room upgrade, and they even gifted my boyfriend a scented candle and personalized birthday card! I love when resorts go above and beyond for guests, and especially local guests at that. I’ll remember this delightful gesture forever.

My room overlooked the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea and Pirates Cave. Pirates Cave earned its name from the swashbuckling days of piracy and buccaneering in Jamaica centuries ago, where pirates used to hide and share their spoils (…and who knows what else) in that cavern. This is now a popular spot for local cliff-jumpers who perform daring dives for tips, as well as for party boats and catamarans. They were definitely entertaining to watch from the comfort of my hotel room and balcony.

Each villa at Rockhouse fuses rustic charm with modern elegance, constructed from the traditional materials of timber, thatch, and stone. The walls are tastefully adorned with local art to showcase the rich cultural tapestry of Jamaica. The room featured air conditioning, a fan, warm lighting, a four poster king-sized bed with mosquito netting, mini fridge, iron and ironing board and closet. The shower and water closet enclosures were each complimented by a big leafy potted plant, and faced a spacious well-lit vanity. The Wi-Fi was strong and available property-wide, even at the pool.

Exploring Rockhouse

The Rockhouse Restaurant

The Rockhouse Hotel features three restaurants: an international cuisine award-winning eponymous restaurant, a local cuisine restaurant called Pushcart and a poolside bar & grill which serves quick bites and hand-poured tropical cocktails. The only restaurant I tried was Pushcart (more on that later). The Rockhouse Spa, two time winner of the World Travel Award for Best Spa in Jamaica, offers multiple treatment experiences such as sauna, reflexology, massage and bathing rituals in an idyllic setting. There’s daily yoga, including a complimentary free class on Tuesday mornings, and other activities such as weekly psilocybin wellness sessions, candle-making and daily snorkeling, kayaking and paddle boarding along 800 feet of pristine cove. Cliff-jumping is at your own risk but not at all discouraged. I quickly lost count of the gazillion red steps leading down to the turquoise Caribbean Sea.

The Red Step Chronicles continue

I had fun wandering through the property’s labyrinthine walkways shrouded by towering palms, coconut trees, almond trees, hibiscuses, bougainvillea and other tropical plants. But, best of all, I enjoyed their saltwater infinity pool which overlooked the expansive ocean and the jaw-dropping sunsets. West End Negril has some of the best sunsets in Jamaica.

Rockhouse has been Green Globe Certified for more than 10 years due to its environmental best practices such as rainwater harvesting, recycling and composting.

Skylarking at Rockhouse’s Sister Resort

The Skylark Resort, located on Negril’s Seven Mile Beach, is Rockhouse’s sister resort. Guests of each resort have access to the property and amenities at both, and there’s even a daily shuttle between them. I made full use of the opportunity to visit the trendy Skylark Resort again having dined there several years ago, but this time I had access to relaxing on their lounge chairs which are shaded by bright sunny yellow umbrellas. It was a delightful beach day. Negril is renowned for its powdery soft white sand and pristine water.

The Pushcart Restaurant

I ended my final night at Rockhouse with dinner at the Pushcart Restaurant. I had the oxtail and callaloo rice, while my partner had the curry goat with rice and peas. The meals were good, but the drinks– not so much. I ordered their signature drink which was underwhelming and only tasted like tonic water. Other than that, I enjoyed the ambience, the live mento and reggae music, and the vibrant murals which transported me straight to Jamaica’s street culture of sound systems and dancehall.

This reads like an awesome itinerary, Rochelle. Rockhouse has this earthy rustic look to it with the wood finish and walls and I like how close it is to its clear streams. I hope it’s not slippery where water meets the “rocks” tho? Super thoughtful for the birthday gifts too. Cheers to em

I would imagine it’s slippery from the seaweed and moss but I didn’t go in the sea. I stuck to the pool for that trip. I love Rockhouse too for that reason. Thanks for reading!

Just what you would imagine a tropical island resort should be like, really lovely.
