Last week’s article on Oktoberfest & Jamaica’s German legacy was so well received that I decided to continue this history series. Plus, this research is super fun! Similar to the Germans, the Welsh migrated to Jamaica in smaller droves but their presence is a lot more tangible today. The Welsh arrived to Jamaica alongside the British in the mid-1600s, but even before then Welsh pirate Henry Morgan was already raiding settlements and shipping bases in Port Royal. In fact, Henry Morgan was one of the richest pirates in the Caribbean and served as one of Jamaica’s earliest Lieutenant Governors under British rule. Most Welsh migrants to Jamaica were ministers of religion and plantation managers especially from the Anglican, Moravian and Methodist faiths. Others were artisans, sailors and labourers. With that said, let’s share five facts about Welsh legacy in Jamaica.

For a Jamaican, I have quintessential music taste. Did you know that Jamaica has German history? Their numbers were significantly smaller compared to other European immigrants, but they are still a visible minority group thanks to The Jamaican German Society which works closely with the German Embassy in Kingston. Today, German isn’t spoken in Jamaica nor taught in Jamaican schools or universities but it’s still possible to enjoy a taste of Germany in Jamaica as the two countries have an intertwined history and diplomatic ties. In commemoration of Oktoberfest, today I’ll share five facts about German legacy in Jamaica.

Did you know that yoga offers profound benefits that extend beyond exercise and flexibility? Yoga’s holistic approach encompasses the mind, body and soul, making it a truly transformative practice. Physically, yoga enhances flexibility, strength, and balance, promotes better posture, reduces the risk of injuries and assists with weight loss and toning. However, the best benefits come from the controlled breathing techniques employed in yoga which can alleviate stress and foster a deep sense of relaxation, mindfulness and mental clarity. These are the benefits I once reaped from yoga with online videos but somehow or the other, I stopped practicing during medical school. Thus, I was super excited to attend Danielle’s inaugural yoga class in Jamaica earlier this month. The mental clarity I gained from that session lasted for days. As such, I decided to have a chat with this Jamaican yogi and share how you can find your own serenity from Danielle’s yoga classes in Kingston, Jamaica.

I often find myself pondering about modern society. Even as a Millennial, I think I’m objective enough to say that there are a lot of problems with modern society. For starters, the “Get Rich Quick” mentality has taken over where many young people don’t want to work hard and make short term sacrifices for long term gain. This culture is further cemented by the fact that we see so many young people doing seemingly minimal work with maximal return e.g. the Tiktokers and social media influencers who sometimes make six figure incomes without much talent or qualifications. I’d love to see people get proportionally rewarded for their effort, talent and qualifications, as opposed to how risqué they’re willing to act on social media to secure the bag.

Weaving is an integral part of Jamaica’s cultural heritage and reflects the island’s diverse traditions and influences. Traditionally, Jamaican weavers utilize natural materials to craft their baskets and woven items such as straw, commonly obtained from dried palm leaves which grow abundantly in Jamaica and provide the weavers with a sustainable and eco-friendly resource. Jamaican weaving techniques have been passed down through generations, with each community or family of weavers often having its signature style. While basket weaving remains an essential cultural tradition, it faces some challenges in the modern era. It’s often said that our cultural traditions are dying as the younger generation appears less interested in learning traditional crafts. However, I recently had the opportunity to interview a young Jamaican weaver who is maintaining this traditional craft. Here’s what Shane Miller from New Market, St. Elizabeth had to say.
