Nestled off the beaten path in the quiet village of Milk River, Clarendon, Jamaica lies the Milk River Hotel, Bath and Spa. The history of Milk River Bath dates back to the 1700s where an enslaved man stumbled upon the saline mineral spring while seeking refuge after a brutal flogging from his master. This spring arises from the foot of the hillside where Carpenter’s Mountains meet the Vere Plains. He bathed his wounds in this unusual spring and when he returned home, his wounds were completely healed to the surprise of his fellow slaves and master Johnathan Ludford. The slave master vowed to never punish him again if he revealed the location of this miraculous spring. Upon Ludford’s death, the spring was developed into a public bath which opened in 1794 and has remained open to the public ever since. Here’s how to plan a visit in 2026, and how my trip went.

How to Find Milk River Hotel & Spa

Milk River Hotel and Spa is located in the village of Milk River, south Clarendon, Jamaica. From Kingston, I took the Highway 2000 (toll required). After exiting the toll, the remaining 18 km stretch of road got bumpy with a few potholes, but was still easily navigable by a small car. We passed a few signs, homes and churches, but the road was largely remote. Overall drive time from Kingston was about 80 minutes, and very easy to find with Google Maps or Waze as the map marker is accurate. This was our second stop after visiting the Cherry Hill River.
Admission to the Milk River mineral bath in 2026 for fifteen minutes costs $600JMD (4 USD) for adults, and $300JMD (2 USD) for children under 12 years old. Time in the mineral water is limited to 15-20 minutes per session to prevent overexposure to its high mineral concentrations and radioactivity which can cause exhaustion and skin irritation. The time limit also prevents overcrowding in their six baths so that all guests can enjoy the attraction safely. Guests are recommended to take 2 to 3 baths per day. The mineral baths are open from 8am to 7pm, and no reservation is required. Outside of the mineral bath, Milk River Hotel and Spa also offers a restaurant, spa and hotel rooms. Please note that the prices listed below are only guaranteed accurate at the time of writing.

- The Restaurant: Open from 8am to 6pm, and entrees start at $1,500JMD (a curry goat dinner costs $3,000). We glanced at the menu but did not dine. The space looked clean , inviting and there were a decent number of tables.
- The Spa: Open from 9am to 5pm, and offers massage starting at $5,000JMD, facials starting at $6,000JMD, body scrubs starting at $7,500JMD, manicures ($2,500) and pedicures ($3,500).
- The Hotel: Prices for room only start at $9,200 JMD per night for locals, while foreigners pay US$115 per night. For room and meal package (breakfast & dinner), prices start at $15,200 JMD per night for locals, and US$150 for foreigners. These rates include free Wi-Fi and access to the mineral bath. The hotel features 20 rooms.
Enjoying the Mineral Spa

We paid our admission fee upstairs then went downstairs to the baths. There are six of them, and one was enough to fit my group of four but we were given the option of two rooms. The time limit wasn’t strictly enforced, but fifteen minutes was enough soak time for me. I opted to let the mineral water dry on my skin for maximal benefit, but it made my skin feel a little itchy. There are showers for those who prefer to rinse the mineral water off, and water in the baths is frequently cycled for cleanliness. All in all, it was quite an interesting experience. I didn’t have any major ailments which needed healing, but the waters are reputed to alleviate rheumatism, gout, and other musculoskeletal aches and pains.
Fun Fact: The waters are 9 times as radioactive as those at Bath, England, and 54 times the strength of the minerals as those at the luxurious Baden Spa in Switzerland.
