Hobbitenango is a whimsical theme park located in Vuelta Grande, 30 minutes from Antigua, Guatemala. Inspired by the popular fantasy book & film series: The Hobbit, Hobbitenango opened to the public in 2015 and seamlessly blends nature and fun. The word “Hobbitenango” conjured visions of rolling hills and quirky round doors in my mind, and I wasn’t left disappointed. With that said, here’s how my visit to Hobbitenango went and why I think it’s one of the best day trips from Antigua.

Getting to Hobbitenango
Hobbitenango is tucked away in the mountains above Antigua, Guatemala, about a 30-minute drive from the city centre. The journey itself is part of the adventure. As we climbed higher, the cobblestone streets of Antigua gave way to lush green hillsides and cool mountain air. The moment I walked through the gate, I felt like I had stepped straight into J.R.R. Tolkien’s imagination. The cheapest way to get to Hobbitenango is by catching the shuttle (a small jitney) from their office in central Antigua at 3A Avenida Norte # 20B. While there, take a picture of the map to help you navigate Hobbitenango when you arrive. Shuttles depart from Antigua at 8AM, 10AM, 12PM, 2PM and 4PM, and return to Antigua at 9AM, 11AM, 1PM, 3PM, 5PM and 6PM. Tickets including transportation cost 115 quetzals (US$15) per person, but if you have your own transport, admission costs only 55 quetzals (US$7). The road to Hobbitenango is winding, steep, and narrow, so I was glad someone else was behind the wheel. Or, turn the adventure up a notch by riding an ATV from Antigua to Hobbitenango and surrounding sites.
First Impressions of Hobbitenango
The first thing you’ll notice about Hobbitenango is how lovingly detailed it is. Brightly painted Hobbit doors are built right into the hillsides, complete with rounded windows, grassy rooftops and wooden signs pointing in every direction. It’s like a whimsical handcrafted village made for daydreamers. Even if you’re not a huge Lord of the Rings fan, there’s something magical about being here. And if you are a fan, you’ll geek out at every detail. However, what really took my breath away were the views. From nearly every angle, you can see sweeping panoramas of the valley below and the three volcanoes which frame Antigua— Agua, Acatenango, and the ever-smoking Fuego.
Things to Do in Hobbitenango
While the Hobbit houses are lovely, Hobbitenango is more than just a few Hobbit houses to snap pictures in front of. It’s actually an eco-park filled with activities, games, and scenic lookouts. Here’s how I spent my three hours there:
1. Giant Swing
The giant swing was my favourite experience– scary, but exciting. Admission comes with unlimited rides, but once was good enough for me. Suspended from a high platform on the edge of the mountain, the swing launches you out into the open air with nothing but the valley stretching below. My stomach dropped with the first push, and I screamed my lungs out… but the rush of flying through the air with such epic scenery below was pure magic.
2. Fairground Games
Scattered throughout the park are small stations where you can try your hand at archery, axe throwing, mini golf and even giant Jenga.
3. Hobbit Houses
Of course, I had to explore the Hobbit houses. Some are decorative facades perfect for photos, while others you can actually enter. They’re surprisingly cozy inside, with wooden beams, round windows, and colorful furnishings. For a moment, I felt like Bilbo Baggins waiting to host a tea party.
4. Viewpoints and Photo Spots
Throughout the park, there are Instagram-worthy spots designed for photos: oversized chairs, wooden platforms, hammocks, swings, and rings suspended over the landscape. I took dozens of pictures, each one with volcanoes in the background. Even if you’re not a big photographer, you’ll want to capture the beauty of this place. Their newest and most popular viewpoint: A Giant Hand which protrudes over the mountain.
5. Food and Drinks
After wandering for a few hours, one is bound to work up an appetite. Hobbitenango’s on-site restaurant and cafés feature Guatemalan coffee, dishes and pastries made with seasonal ingredients.
6. Spending the Night
I only visited for three hours, but Hobbitenango also offers Hobbit-themed lodging if you want the full Middle Earth experience. Imagine waking up inside a round-door cottage, stepping outside to crisp mountain air, and sipping coffee while volcanoes rise in the distance. This should be on the bucket list for all Hobbit fans.
Practical Tips for Visiting Hobbitenango
If you’re planning your own trip to Hobbitenango, here are a few things I learned that might help:
- Bring layers: While it’s mostly warm in the daytime, weather in the mountains can change on a dime, especially if it rains. A light jacket or sweater will keep you comfortable.
- Wear comfortable shoes: You’ll be walking on uneven terrain, stairs, dirt paths and grassy slopes. Sneakers or hiking shoes are best.
- Plan at least half a day: Between the activities, food, and photo ops, you’ll want 3-4 hours to soak it all in. Roundtrip transportation to/from Antigua adds another hour.
- Go in the morning: The skies are usually clearer earlier in the day, giving you the best chance for volcano views before clouds roll in.
Why Hobbitenango is Worth the Day Trip
There are so many things to do in and around Antigua, but Hobbitenango stands out as one of the most unique. It’s part fantasy, part eco-park, and part mountaintop retreat. Hobbitenango offered a chance to escape the ordinary, embrace my inner child and see Guatemala’s landscapes from a magical new perspective. That being said, Altamira, another adventure park in Vuelta Grande located six minutes away from Hobbitenango looks like a cool place to visit too. It has cabins, a restaurant, a golden hand and other interesting viewpoints, but I didn’t have enough time for both parks. If you visited Altamira, I’d love to hear some feedback in the comments!

Visiting Hobbitenango felt like stepping into a fairytale with its quirky Hobbit themes and jaw-dropping views. If you’re planning a trip to Antigua, make sure to add Hobbitenango to your itinerary. It’s not just a photo op—it’s an experience that blends fantasy with natural beauty, and it reminded me why I love traveling in the first place: to find wonder in unexpected places.
