3 Jamaican Festivals Worth the Journey

The jewel of the Caribbean, Jamaica, is not only famed for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture but also for its lively festivals that celebrate the island’s rich heritage. Among the myriad of events that dot our calendar, several stand out as must-visit experiences for any traveler seeking to immerse themselves in the essence of Jamaican culture. I wrote about our annual Jamaican food festivals and music festivals last year, however there are some more experiences which didn’t fit into these categories but deserved the mention. Each of these 3 festivals offers a unique glimpse into different aspects of Jamaica’s soul, from its literary prowess to its sporting legacy. With that said, today let’s talk about three Jamaican festivals worth the journey.

1. Calabash International Literary Festival

Treasure Beach

The Calabash International Literary Festival is a celebration of words, stories, and the power of literature that takes place biennially on the serene southern shores of Treasure Beach in the St. Elizabeth parish. Since its inception in 2001, Calabash has evolved into one of the Caribbean’s premier literary events, attracting renowned authors, poets, and thinkers from around the globe. Set against the backdrop of swaying palms and the gentle lull of the Caribbean Sea, Calabash offers a unique blend of readings, discussions, performances, and workshops, creating an intimate and engaging environment for both writers and readers alike. From thought-provoking panel discussions on pressing social issues to captivating poetry readings under the stars, the festival caters to a diverse audience, fostering dialogue and fostering connections across cultures.

What sets Calabash apart is its commitment to accessibility; all events are free to the public, ensuring that literature remains inclusive and accessible to all. This egalitarian ethos, coupled with the warm hospitality of Treasure Beach’s people, creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and kinship that lingers long after the festival has ended. For this reason, the Calabash Literary Festival is on my list and it should be on yours too!

2. Negril Reggae Marathon

For those who prefer to feel the rhythm pulsating through their veins, the Reggae Marathon offers an exhilarating experience that combines the thrill of athletic achievement with the infectious energy of Jamaica’s most iconic musical genre, reggae. Held annually in Negril, the Reggae Marathon attracts runners from across the globe, drawn by the promise of a scenic route, warm tropical breezes, and a soundtrack of reggae classics to keep them motivated every step of the way.

Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a novice lace-up, the Reggae Marathon has something for everyone, with options for a full marathon, half marathon, or 10K race. The course winds its way along Negril’s stunning coastline, passing pristine beaches, lush tropical foliage, and cheering spectators, creating an unforgettable backdrop for participants as they strive to cross the finish line. But, the Reggae Marathon is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of community and camaraderie too. At the finish line, there’s a post-race beach party featuring live reggae, sumptuous Jamaican cuisine and plenty of Red Stripe beer to go around. So far, my only road races have been a handful of 5Ks. I hope to check off a 10K or half marathon one of these days, and Negril is exactly where I plan to do it. This year, it will be held on December 8, 2024.

3. The Treasure Beach Triathlon

Coming full circle, we round out the list with another Treasure Beach festival. Amidst the swaying palms and pristine shores unfolds another exhilarating sporting event which combines athleticism with the sheer beauty of the Caribbean landscape – the Treasure Beach Triathlon. Unlike the bustling resorts of Montego Bay or Negril, Treasure Beach exudes a laid-back charm that beckons travelers seeking authentic Jamaican experiences. Here, time seems to slow down as you stroll along untouched beaches, mingle with friendly locals, and savour mouthwatering seafood at beachside shacks.

What an ideal venue to push one’s limits! The Treasure Beach Triathlon typically takes place in the early hours of the morning, with participants gathering at the starting line as the sun begins to cast its golden hues across the horizon. It kicks off with a 300m swim leg in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, followed by a 25km cycling leg which traverses a scenic route through lush countryside and quaint villages. The last leg of the triathlon is a 7km running route takes that meanders through coastal dunes and shaded groves. The Treasure Beach Triathlon is as much about camaraderie as it is about competition, with participants and spectators alike coming together to revel in the excitement that permeates the event. Perhaps one day I’ll be fit enough to participate in a triathlon myself, and if so, I know exactly where I’m headed. This year, it will be held on April 27, 2024.

  1. I think my partner would especially love the Calabash International Literary Festival, as she loves reading, writing, and everything in between! Especially here in the US where Caribbean literature is seldom talked about, let alone read, it’d be insightful to check out Calabash for that reason! As much as I love to run and work out, the marathon and triathlon are a bit too intense for me, so I’d probably skip those, haha. Thanks for sharing some cool and unique festivals in Jamaica, Elle!

    1. Agreed! The marathon and triathlon are too intense for me too, but I’d start out with the Reggae Marathon’s 10K and work my way up. Hopefully this December, but we’ll see. 😅

As for Calabash, that’s awesome!!! She’d love Caribbean literature and you’d both love Treasure Beach. I grew up on Caribbean literature + for my high school literature classes, and it’s definitely interesting. A lot of themes explored from love, greed, betrayal and resilience, as well as you get historical and cultural contexts (the African element of our heritage vs. Eurocentricism get explored a lot). I enjoyed them way more to Shakespeare and the other traditional literature we had to read. Which reminds me, I’ve been meaning to resume reading for fun. Since college, that hobby just.. died. Anyway, thanks for reading!!
