Connect to Nature at Casas de Tierra in Runaway Bay

When do you take a break? Is it after working hard until you wear yourself thin, or do you schedule regular periods of rest? I’d say I fall into the latter group, but even I often struggle with achieving work-life balance. After working hard for several consecutive weeks, I got some much needed R&R and the best sleep I’d had in ages at the Casas de Tierra in Runaway Bay, St. Ann. With that said, today I’m here to recount my recent weekend experience at the beautiful adobe-style poolside Cattleya Cottage, and share why you should consider a stay at Casas de Tierra the next time you need to reconnect with nature.

What to Expect at Casas de Tierra

Casas de Tierra are adobe-style villas located in Runaway Bay, St. Ann which were built with traditional earthen walls using local soils and stones of the surrounding area. The rustic charm of these earthen cottages are further enhanced by native and upcycled woods, stones and other pieces of unique wall art. These cottages are surrounded on all four sides by a profusion of lush tropical flowers, elegant palms and towering fruit trees in which lively birds and butterflies can be seen and heard flitting about. A freshwater pool sits in the middle of this spacious courtyard and garden and is flanked by two of the three guest cottages, Cattleya (1BR) and Vanda (2BR). The third, Lil Negril (1BR), is only mere meters away.

Relaxation starts at the gate as the high walls and remote controlled gate create a feeling of seclusion and security. The lovingly tended gardens and pool set my mind at ease, and check-in was a breeze. My lovely host Francine had sent the house manual days in advance for my perusal, and was available on-site to welcome my partner and I, hand us our keys and share other important tidbits for our safety and comfort.

I stayed at the 1-bedroom Cattleya Cottage, and just like the other two guest cottages at Casas de Tierra, Cattleya was cozy and outfitted with modern amenities. These included a comfortable king size bed with television and Netflix, an iron and ironing board, air conditioning and an en-suite bathroom with hot water, soap, lotions, mosquito wipes and an abundance of fresh fluffy towels. The kitchenette was equipped with a mini-fridge, microwave, stove, cookware, tableware, local snacks and cooking basics like salt, sugar, tea and spices. The windows and doors are meshed, so you can leave them open to enjoy the natural cool breeze and skip the A/C like we did for most of the day. There is also a washing machine, outdoor drying rack and a patio overlooking the pool. Next to the pool was a work hut which gives remote workers plenty of options from which to work, and the Wi-Fi was fast both indoors and outside.

I must say, after driving to Casas de Tierra from work, I was completely worn out so after showering, I fell into the deepest most restful sleep I’d had in weeks! That ensured I was up early to properly explore the grounds, have a swim and soak in all the tranquility that the property has to offer on day two. I adored the personal touches of this Airbnb with their elegant wind chimes tinkling softly night and day on the cool coastal breeze. I could listen to the sounds of these peaceful wind chimes by the pool forever.

How to Find Casas de Tierra

Casas de Tierra are centrally located just off the A1 highway at Lot 142 Cardiff Hall in Runaway Bay, which makes them within walking distance of several supermarkets, ATM machines and local restaurants. More popular restaurants such as Sharkies Seafood, KAG Jerk Centre and the Milestone Restaurant, Bar & Grill are less than 10 minutes away by car.

Cardiff Hall Beach

In terms of entertainment, there’s the beautiful Cardiff Hall Beach Club within 10 minutes walking distance. Guests get unlimited free access to this beach during their stay, and I made sure to check it out on my final day as I didn’t get around to visiting it last year when I stayed at the Escape Villa at Vista. It was well worth the walk. Other attractions are a bit further away and may require a rental car or taxi. These include the Green Grotto Caves and Puerto Seco Beach in Discovery Bay, as well as the Chukka Cove adventure park which comes with horseback riding, ziplining, ATV rides and much more in Llandovery and Ocho Rios.

  1. Looks like paradise! For me, I try my best to schedule regular periods of rest, but at the same time, these periods are every 2-3 months, which is too long for me to go without a break– by the time I can rest, I’ve already worn myself thin! Any case, Casa de Tierra looks like the perfect oasis to recharge, all the while in a beautiful, lush environment with easy access to good food. I’m sure you enjoyed a dip (or two) in that pristine pool during your stay! Thanks for sharing, Elle. 🙂

    1. Unfortunately I only had one pool dip BUT at least I also made the walk to their nearby beach. 🙂 I think we have this in common. I try to schedule my breaks every 2-3 months as well but somehow I always seem to do better with breaks towards the end of the year since my birthday and my partner’s both fall in this part of the year and what better excuse to treat yourself than celebrating another revolution around the sun. Cheers to more R&R in 2024 & beyond. 🙂 thanks for reading!
