1. Accompong Maroon Festival

Nestled in the hills of St. Elizabeth lies the historic Leeward Maroon town of Accompong, named after its original Maroon leader, Accompong. Every year on January 6th, this community comes alive with the Accompong Maroon Festival, commemorating the signing of the peace treaty between the Maroons and the British in 1739 which granted them thousands of acres of land and self government which they still enjoy to this day. The festival is a captivating display of Maroon culture, featuring traditional drumming, dancing, storytelling and the sounding of the abeng, a cow horn which is blown to send messages and call community members to attention. Artisans showcase their craftsmanship, offering intricately woven baskets, vibrant textiles, and handmade jewelry for purchase. There is also an abundance of local food such as jerk chicken, roasted yam, and breadfruit. For a nominal fee, one can enjoy this festival which showcases the close ties between Jamaica and West Africa.

2. Charles Town Maroon Festival

In the lush hills of Portland, Jamaica’s most beautiful parish, lies the picturesque village of Charles Town, home to one of Jamaica’s oldest Maroon settlements. Each year, usually in June, the Charles Town Maroon Festival draws visitors from far and wide to partake in its festivities spread across four to five days. This festival offers a blend of traditional rituals and modern entertainment, providing a dynamic experience for attendees of all ages. From exhilarating drumming competitions to spirited dance performances, there is no shortage of excitement at this vibrant celebration. Visitors can also participate in guided tours of the surrounding rainforest, learning about the medicinal plants and natural resources that have sustained the Maroon community for centuries. The 16th Charles Town Maroon Festival will be held from June 20-23, 2024.

3. Kromanti Fest

Further up the road in the hills of Portland amidst the rugged terrain and lush vegetation, lies the village of Moore Town – the spiritual center of the Windward Maroons. This is the venue of Kromanti Fest which debuted in June 2022 as a sacred celebration to honour the ancestors and preserve the spiritual traditions of the Windward Maroon people. This festival’s motto of “Preserving the Past, Promoting the Present and Protecting the Future” shines through in its traditional drumming, dance and music which celebrates Jamaica’s indigenous people from the Tainos and Maroons all the way to the emergence of Rastafari from the 20th century to present. This year’s festival will be held on May 17-18, 2024.
