Today’s brief post is brought to you by the WordPress writing prompt of the day which asks “What does “having it all” mean to you? Is it attainable?” Ever so often I answer these daily writing prompts to stretch the not-so-old writing fingers and my imagination. You see, these days I’m not exploring as much as I’d like. I’ve dedicated the first half of 2023 to long term projects, such as writing the first step of exams for my internal medicine residency so you may have noticed that my posts have become mostly lifestyle related instead of travel-themed. Fret not, as I’ll be out exploring in the latter half of the year and sharing those adventures but until then, these prompts keep my blog alive. With that said, today let’s answer this philosophical question.

Having It All Is About Mindset
I think “having it all” is fully attainable, depending on what your “all” is. For me, having it all has always been simple and I find myself growing even simpler with age. It’s inherently human to constantly want more for oneself though, and I think it’s both our biggest blessing and flaw as humans. Thus, unless one actively chooses to slow down, reflect and count one’s blessings with gratitude, happiness becomes unattainable.

For me right now, having it all is having good health and having the support of several loved ones such as my doting mother and loving partner who are also healthy. Good health is priceless, and I’ve seen firsthand how quickly this gift can go. I also have food with the ability to pick and choose what to eat, or where to eat. I have clothing and the opportunity to purchase new stylish clothing when I please. I have a comfortable home to unwind after long and tiring shifts. I have a job which covers my bills and a few extra luxuries, as well as the opportunity to further my career with postgraduate training in my 20s. I have the freedom to travel across my beautiful island home and the world as I please, minus a few pesky visa restrictions as the proud holder of a Jamaican passport. Last but not least, I have this lovely blog, dedicated readers and a WordPress community which encourage me to continue penning my thoughts and sharing unique experiences with the world. With that said, I do believe I have it all and I am extremely grateful. Anything more than this is as we say in Jamaica, brawta (surplus).
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?
The Holy Bible, RSV. Matthew 6:25-26
Wrap Up

I invite you all to think about your “all” today: what you like, what you don’t like and what can you change to “achieve it all.” Certainly my life has not been smooth, and I’m not always this positive but I work hard to be. Life is a journey, and since none of us knows how long we’ll be on the ride, I make time to pause, enjoy the finer things in life and count my blessings. I hope you do too. Share with me your answers to this question below, and I’ll see you this Friday with a post I scheduled a few weeks ago. 🙂 Subscribe in order not to miss it + click the confirm link in your inbox.

Having it all to me is not about material things, so I have to agree with your thoughts, Rochelle. I wish you the best of luck with your exams and residency!

Thank you so much! I’m happy you agree. Based on your travels, I had a feeling we would have a similar non-materialistic mindset 🙂

Couldn’t agree more. Life is about experiences not things (except obviously the necessities like food), and the ability to have those experiences is what I consider to be having it all as well.

Wow, what an inspiring post. I agree. Having it all is about mindset. I’ve discovered that having it all is about having lots and lots of money. If you have money, you can afford healthy food. If you get sick, you can afford the proper medication. If your family or friends need help with your time or money, you can help them because you can afford to take the time off work.

Thank you! I agree that money is important but it will never be everything. For instance, there are still limitations of modern medicine even in first world countries with the best health care so having all the money in the world can’t always restore good health (it helps with prevention though!). Also, if working towards riches interferes with family life and relationships, eventually one may find that the genuine people won’t stick around. Thanks for reading

I was coming from the perspective that at one point, I couldn’t afford to hang out with my friends and I was too embarrassed to tell them. For example, dinner out or buying them birthday presents came out of my grocery budget because I didn’t have an entertainment budget. Since then, I realized how powerful money can be.

Oh, I understand your perspective a lot better now. 🙂 Thank you for sharing. That’s very understandable and relatable as well. My mom is a single parent and struggled to make ends meet so I didn’t have the heart to ask her for extra money to go out as a teen or in my early 20s. I turned down a lot of invites to what could’ve made great memories. I’m very happy to be in a better place now financially, and to make her life easier too! That’s probably why I prioritize new adventures & experiences now too. I’m catching up on what I feel I missed out on.

Thanks for the share. I can certainly relate. During that dark time, I also missed out on some social opportunities because I prioritized food over fun. Glad to put that time behind me!

I absolutely don’t mind, the in-between posts cause they keep my company 😊. Anyway, I love this post it’s refreshing and you know I’m all about finding gratitude in everything and counting the small blessings and celebrating. It’s such a beautiful habit and I believe it somewhat keeps the mind healthy and attract more good things.
(Might put my own spin on this some time later down. Didn’t check the app in time)

I second everything you said. Good health is priceless, and it’s one of the most important things I continually appreciate for me and my family. As we get older, time also becomes more precious, and this motivates me to choose my activities wisely. I hope you continue to live and love your life!

I know exactly how to answer this, Rochelle. I thank my lucky stars for what I have. I’m 66 now, I have, and have never had, any health issues, I’m not on any medication at all. My wife is the most wonderful, funny, exciting person I’ve ever met. I have three children who each have a wonderful loving partner, and I have three beautiful, healthy granddaughters. And on top of all of this, we travel the world in the style that we wish, learning about life in a hundred different cultures. It’s been a long road but I have it all, I love it all, I am incredibly thankful for my good fortune. My message to everyone is : NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS

What a beautiful life you’ve built alongside your wife! I’m super happy to hear this. That’s the life I envision for myself in my golden years- healthy, strong, traveling the world and having a husband, children and grandchildren to share these experiences with. I think the life I’m building currently will make those dreams possible too. 🙂 Thank you for sharing & I wish you decades more together doing just that 🙂
