Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica, is a destination that captivates thousands of visitors each year with its rich vibrant culture and natural beauty. A city of paradoxes, Kingston is the heartbeat of Jamaica as most Jamaican art, music and trends originate here. After all, Kingston holds one-sixth of Jamaica’s population. Most visitors to Jamaica bypass its capital city because there are misconceptions that all of Kingston is dangerous, or just not that interesting or beautiful. By doing so, most tourists miss out on an authentic Jamaican experience. I’ve lived in Kingston for all but two of my twenty-something years so I’m more than qualified to share five reasons why Kingston, Jamaica is a must-visit destination.

What Would You Change About Modern Society?

I often find myself pondering about modern society. Even as a Millennial, I think I’m objective enough to say that there are a lot of problems with modern society. For starters, the “Get Rich Quick” mentality has taken over where many young people don’t want to work hard and make short term sacrifices for long term gain. This culture is further cemented by the fact that we see so many young people doing seemingly minimal work with maximal return e.g. the Tiktokers and social media influencers who sometimes make six figure incomes without much talent or qualifications. I’d love to see people get proportionally rewarded for their effort, talent and qualifications, as opposed to how risqué they’re willing to act on social media to secure the bag.

Stevos Weavos: A Story of Culture & Craftsmanship

Weaving is an integral part of Jamaica’s cultural heritage and reflects the island’s diverse traditions and influences. Traditionally, Jamaican weavers utilize natural materials to craft their baskets and woven items such as straw, commonly obtained from dried palm leaves which grow abundantly in Jamaica and provide the weavers with a sustainable and eco-friendly resource. Jamaican weaving techniques have been passed down through generations, with each community or family of weavers often having its signature style. While basket weaving remains an essential cultural tradition, it faces some challenges in the modern era. It’s often said that our cultural traditions are dying as the younger generation appears less interested in learning traditional crafts. However, I recently had the opportunity to interview a young Jamaican weaver who is maintaining this traditional craft. Here’s what Shane Miller from New Market, St. Elizabeth had to say.
