What Would You Change About Modern Society?

I often find myself pondering about modern society. Even as a Millennial, I think I’m objective enough to say that there are a lot of problems with modern society. For starters, the “Get Rich Quick” mentality has taken over where many young people don’t want to work hard and make short term sacrifices for long term gain. This culture is further cemented by the fact that we see so many young people doing seemingly minimal work with maximal return e.g. the Tiktokers and social media influencers who sometimes make six figure incomes without much talent or qualifications. I’d love to see people get proportionally rewarded for their effort, talent and qualifications, as opposed to how risqué they’re willing to act on social media to secure the bag.

Are You Seeking Security or Adventure?

These WordPress prompts are really getting good! I found this one too good to pass up so here I am answering another philosophical question, similar to when I answered the question “what does having it all mean to you?” a few weeks ago. It may come as a surprise considering that I run a travel & lifestyle blog which began as a space to showcase my mostly Jamaican adventures, but I’d choose security any day. Here’s why.

Why Reggae Is My Favourite Music Genre

If I weren’t Jamaican, would reggae still be my favourite music genre? I guess that’s a question I’ll never have an answer to. However, as I answer yet another WordPress prompt, I find myself thinking. Why is reggae my favourite genre of music?

Happy CARICOM Day!

Did you know that July 4 is celebrated as CARICOM Day in the Caribbean? CARICOM, which stands for Caribbean Community, is an intergovernmental political and economic union which consists of fifteen member and five associate states. The Treaty of Chaguaramas was signed on July 4, 1973 in Chaguaramas, Trinidad & Tobago and signified the start of CARICOM. In celebration of fifty years, today has been declared a national holiday in several Caribbean islands (unfortunately not in Jamaica though!).

The “I Have It All” Mindset

Today’s brief post is brought to you by the WordPress writing prompt of the day which asks “What does “having it all” mean to you? Is it attainable?” Ever so often I answer these daily writing prompts to stretch the not-so-old writing fingers and my imagination. You see, these days I’m not exploring as much as I’d like. I’ve dedicated the first half of 2023 to long term projects, such as writing the first step of exams for my internal medicine residency so you may have noticed that my posts have become mostly lifestyle related instead of travel-themed. Fret not, as I’ll be out exploring in the latter half of the year and sharing those adventures but until then, these prompts keep my blog alive. With that said, today let’s answer this philosophical question.

Will ChatGPT and AI Replace Bloggers?

Last month, a friend jokingly told me that blogging and copywriting are obsolete. He’s a software engineer so his stance wasn’t surprising. There is growing global concern that artificial intelligence (AI) will replace millions of jobs in professions such as office administration, law, architecture, engineering, finance, management, sales, healthcare, art and design over the next decade. This year, the latest version of ChatGPT passed the US medical licensing exam with flying colours. Experienced doctors may be pushed aside by sophisticated robots that can perform delicate surgeries more precisely and read x-rays more accurately than a human eye can. With that said, it seems both my jobs are in jeopardy, huh? However, here’s why I’m not worried. At least, not yet.

2022 Year in Review

Last year was the first year that I didn’t write an end of year review. In retrospect, I’m sorry that I skipped that tradition given that Adventures from Elle celebrated five years of existence in 2021 and had received recognition on national television and in the local paper. However, I couldn’t bring myself to write a recap publicly. 2021 was one of the most difficult years of my life, personally and professionally. The pandemic was at its peak with the delta CoVid-19 variant in circulation between August to November 2021, and I still don’t feel as if I’ve fully recovered from that trauma. However, I’m happy to report that I’m in a much better place emotionally for 2022, and my workplace + life in Jamaica are mostly back to normal. I celebrated SIX years of blogging on Adventures from Elle this month too. With that said, let’s recap 2022.

Seven Annoying Things Bloggers Do

A lot takes place behind the scenes when creating a blog, vlog or even an Instagram post which non-creators may never fully appreciate. Thus, there can be a bit of friction and eye-rolling from non-creators when they are around creators in their element. Over the years, I’ve met and interacted with dozens of different personality types that coexist in the blogosphere and some interactions are better than others. Also, since I often travel with non-creators, this means I’ve probably been the annoying blogger to someone else too, ha! A bit of introspection is good for the soul. Here are the seven annoying things which bloggers do.

What does ‘Green’ mean to you?

WordPress has introduced a new blog challenge called WordPrompts designed to encourage hobby bloggers to publish one post per month surrounding a theme. The WordPrompt for April is ‘green’. As a happy WordPress-er I couldn’t be happier to participate in this challenge. I’ve had blogs before in the past which never amounted to anything, so I’m glad that I’ve managed to be more or less consistent on this platform for the past five years. When I found WordPress, the rest became history. WordPress feels like home. I began travel blogging in Jamaica long before it became trendy to do so, and unlike most Jamaican ‘travel bloggers’ I actually blog. I enjoy writing as my means of self-expression. I don’t travel just to make content. I travel and write because I genuinely love both activities. These are my main source of happiness. As I write this post now, I feel my mood significantly improve. I get lost in my own little world and forget all my troubles when I write and when I’m outdoors. The trees, mountains, rivers and beach make me happy.

2021: Mid-Year Mark

The ability to reflect on the past and use it to plan for the future is one of the abilities which sets humans apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. I reflect at the close of every chapter of my life, be it relationships, leaving an old job, ending an academic year and certainly, at the mid point of every year. I’ve been sharing mid-year reviews since 2018 to summarize what I’ve been up to so far and where I’ve reached in my goals. Read on for a few life updates and what to expect from Adventures from Elle for the rest of 2021.
